Volunteers are the driving force behind every part of United Way of Oakville.
Local community-minded individuals form UWO's volunteer Board of Directors and its annual campaign and community investments are led by volunteer cabinets.

Board of Directors
- United Way of Oakville is led by a group of senior volunteers elected to oversee the vision and strategic direction of the organization.
- The role of the Board is to establish organizational policies, focus on long-term goals, evaluate CEO performance and manage funds in a fiscally responsible manner. Board members must live or work in Oakville, be knowledgeable about the community, be organized and have valuable experience in labour, business, government, or the voluntary sector. The term is three years. Attendance to monthly board meetings is mandatory as well as availability to participate in United Way events.

Campaign Cabinet
- The Campaign Cabinet is a leading force in the development of annual campaign strategies for United Way of Oakville and is comprised of a group of experienced volunteers holding a variety of senior positions in the private and public sector in Oakville.
- This cabinet develops an integrated annual campaign plan, motivates and monitors resources executing the plan, conducts fundraising visits to prospects, champions the campaign in its own workplace and participates in Cabinet meetings and key events. The Campaign Cabinet members must hold a senior position in the private or public sector in Oakville and offer a commitment of at least one year.

Community Impact Cabinet
- Each year, members of the Community Impact Cabinet (CIC) make funding recommendations and create policies related to the allocations process. Members must be team-players, with strong analytical skills and exhibit creative-thinking and knowledge of the social services sector. CIC members are expected to attend monthly meetings and UWO events.

Agency Funding Committee
- United Way of Oakville relies on volunteers from our community to assess the agencies applying for funding.
- Role:
Review two or three of the funding applications submitted by agencies
Work as part of a team in assessing agencies against criteria
Meet with individuals from the agencies that you are assessing (where necessary) - Qualifications:
Knowledge of the health and social service sector in Oakville is an asset
Well-developed interpersonal skills
Ability to function effectively as a team member
Individuals with financial expertise particularly encouraged
Live or work in Oakville - Commitment:
Training is provided. The committee meets monthly with its most intensive work done between mid-November to the end of January - If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact Chandra Hardeen, Director of Community Impact.
Community Leadership Canvasser
- Role:
Provide input for United Way of Oakville's community Leadership Fundraising Program which seeks to acquire donors willing to contribute at the Leadership level ($1000 or more) - Qualifications:
Comfort in calling and/or meeting donors and prospective donors to discuss their philanthropic giving
Ability to identify prospective donors
Must contribute at the Leadership level ($1000 or more) - Commitment:
Attend an orientation and training session with United Way
Attend prospect identification meeting
Attend one committee meeting in June, September, and January
Attend recognition event(s) where possible

Volunteer Trainer/Consultant
- The Training and Consulting program provides practical education, training, and support for the not-for-profit sector that is customized, outcome focused, and designed to meet the needs of voluntary sector organizations. Topics include; leadership skills, board development, governance and accountability, proposal writing, sustainability, evaluation, volunteer management, community collaborations, and capacity building.
- Role
To assist in the provision of advice, skills enhancement and organizational support to non-profit agencies based on experiential expertise through facilitation of workshops or through direct consultation
To build capacity and organizational effectives through training and consulting resources
Develop the structure and content of workshop after consultation with Training and Consulting Manager -
Qualifications
Volunteer experience in the non-profit sector
Professional experience/knowledge of the sector
Skills in identified area of expertise
Facilitation and presentation skills
Skills, knowledge of adult learning techniques
Knowledge of group development
Analytical skills
Problem solving skills
Good communication and active listening skills
Strong interpersonal skills - Commitment
Attend all scheduled training and facilitation sessions
Attend an orientation session with United Way
Meet as required with the program manager to discuss the assignment
Adhere to the agreed upon plan
Upon completion of the services, discuss the outcomes with the program manager
Learn the content and delivery techniques for each session presented
